Industry analyst Ken Werner, writing for SID’s InformationDisplay magazine, highlighted Nanosys Quantum Dot technology leadership in a review of exciting emissive display technology from the 2018 DisplayWeek show in Los Angeles. According to Ken,
“If you buy a quantum-dot or QD-enhanced LCD TV, it will have quantum dots made by or licensed by Nanosys. There are other quantum-dot companies operating in this industry – but for some reason those dots don’t appear in products any of us buy.
In its booth, Nanosys showed technology demos that included one for ink-jetted QD matrices to replace the matrix color filters used in current LCDs. Another showed early- stage electroluminescent QDs.
Also shown in the booth, and new to me… the Vizio P Series Quantum TV with Nanosys’s Hyperion QD film and 192 full-array local dimming zones delivered an impressive image.”

Chris Chinnock writing for DisplayDaily and taking some time during to think big about how changing power dynamics in the media are driving new innovation throughout the display ecosystem. He identifies "realism" as a key trend for display technologies.
"I don’t think there is much doubt that the key trend in display technology is going to be realism. That is, many applications will strive to create a visual and auditory experience that will be very close to what we would perceive as real... higher resolution (8K and beyond), wider dynamic range (to 10K nits), a bigger color gamut (BT 2020 and beyond) will all be pushed forward. It’s going to happen. These technologies will not plateau."

Tokyo, Japan, August 6, 2018 Hitachi Chemical Co., Ltd. announces the adoption of its quantum dot film with a wider color gamut of liquid crystal displays for the new quantum dot “P-Series Quantum 65” 4K televisions (to be released in July 2018) produced by the American TV manufacturer VIZIO, Inc. This quantum dot film is designed to reduce the environmental load in accordance with the European Union’s Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) Directive.

"Back at Display Week 2018 a few weeks ago, Nanosys, the Quantum Dot masters here in California, they worked out a new technology called QDOG. Which was their Quantum Dot on Glass. One of the things about QDOG in particular was that they were able to produce the Quantum Dot material on a glass plane using printable technology, which was a big deal. It didn't require vacuum chambers and vapor deposition or things like that."
Philips just launched the world's first shipping monitor with the DisplayHDR 1000 certification, the Philips Momentum 436M6VBPAB. Thanks to the Quantum Dots inside, this 43" monitor delivers 1,000-nits peak brightness with wide color gamut.
According to Anton Shilov, writing for Anandtech, "A major selling point of the display it its Quantum Dot-enhanced backlighting that enables it to cover an above-average 97.6% of the DCI-P3 color gamut as well as 100% of the sRGB color range... Apparently, Philips (just like ASUS, MSI, Samsung,and NVIDIA) believes that demand for large gaming-grade displays is about to skyrocket and it has a product that offers premium features at a moderate price."

It turns out that many of the super saturated colors of a fireworks show fall well outside the even the massive UltraHD BT.2020 color gamut. It's great example of the kind of experiences that are possible as we push displays closer to reproducing the full capability of the human visual system. In the meantime, it's also a great reminder to leave your TV behind and get outside this Wednesday to see some fireworks in person!

Over the next month, an estimated 3.4 billion (according to GlobalWebIndex) soccer fans will have an opportunity to watch World Cup games in 4K resolution with High Dynamic Range (HDR) and a wider palette of colors. This means the experience of watching the games on TV will be much closer to being at the stadium in person.
