Three Members of Nanosys Named as World's Top 100 Young Innovators by MIT Technology Review

Palo Alto, CA - (September 15, 2003).Nanosys, Inc., a leader in nanotechnology-enabled systems, announced today that two of its employees, Dr Stephen Empedocles and Dr. Xiangfeng Duan, and one member of its exclusive Scientific Advisory Board, Dr. Peidong Yang, have been named to the prestigious 2003 TR100 list of the world’s 100 Top Young Innovators by MIT’s Technology Review.

The TR100 is an annual award given by MIT’s Magazine of Innovation, Technology Review and recognizes 100 individuals under the age of 35 whose innovative work in business and technology has a profound impact on our world. Nominees are recognized for their contribution in transforming the nature of technology in industries such as biotechnology, computing, energy, manufacturing, nanotechnology, novel materials, telecommunications and transportation and are regarded as having the most potential to shape significant technological innovations in the 21st century. The nominees are selected by an elite panel of judges consisting of current business and technology leaders from leading academics to technology executives and investors.

Dr. Paul Alivisatos, Professor of Chemistry at the University of California Berkeley and one of the leading pioneers in the field of nanotechnology, remarked: "What distinguishes the TR100 award is that it is looking ahead into the next century and identifying the leaders of tomorrow. The ability of Nanosys to attract and cultivate three of the top 100 people in the field is a remarkable accomplishment."

Drs. Empedocles, Duan, and Yang are recognized for their work in the field of nanotechnology, having each contributed to the discovery, development and integration of nanomaterials with fundamentally unique electronic, optical and magnetic properties into nano-enabled systems applicable in fields as varied as life and physical sciences, information technology, electronics, and renewable energy. Driven by curiosity, talent and determination, Drs. Empedocles, Duan, and Yang have created innovative inorganic semiconductor nano-systems that are already reshaping industry's thinking and approach to developing new technologies in the nanoscale world.

"It’s a very special honor and a great joy to receive this TR100 award," said Dr. Xiangfeng Duan, a Scientist in Nanosys Advanced Technology Group “After years of academic work on the fundamental development of nanowires at Harvard University, it is especially exciting to turn nanowire technology into commercial reality with the group of outstanding scientists at Nanosys.”
Dr. Stephen Empedocles, Nanosys Co-founder and Director of Business Development, commented: "It’s an honor for all of us to be selected among the great innovators in the TR100. It’s also exciting to see that the world recognizes the contribution to innovation being made by the Nanosys team as a whole, and the importance of the nanotechnology industry to the future of innovation."

“These three awards highlight our successful approach to developing truly avant-garde technologies with a team of the world’s most innovative researchers”, commented Larry Bock, Nanosys President and CEO, “They recognize the great strides the Nanosys team has achieved towards converting the promises of nanotechnology into reality.”
