Nanosys Founders Selected as Top Nanotechnology Researcher and Business Leader Finalist by Small Times Magazine 2003 Best of Small Tech

Palo Alto, CA - (December 1, 2003). Nanosys Inc., a leader in nanotechnology-enabled systems, announced today that Founders Dr. Paul Alivisatos and Larry Bock were selected as the 2003 Small Times Magazine Best of Small Tech Top Researcher and Top Business Leader Finalist, respectively. Dr. Alivisatos, Nanosys Scientific Advisory Board Member and Professor of Chemistry at the University of California, Berkeley is recognized for his breakthrough research in the field of nano-enabled solar cells and his pioneering work in the development of novel nanomaterial structures. Mr. Bock, Nanosys Executive Chairman, is recognized for his outstanding vision in founding Nanosys, his business leadership, and his role in steering the company towards a leadership position in the emerging nanotechnology industry.

The 2003 Small Times Magazine Best of Small Tech Awards recognize the leading people, products, and companies in nanotechnology, MEMS, and Microsystems. The recipients of the Small Times Magazine Best of Small Tech Awards, along with the finalists, were selected by Small Times Media news staff and an industry panel of experts.

About Larry Bock

Mr. Bock is the Executive Chairman of the Board of Directors of Nanosys, Inc. Mr. Bock was the Founder and Initial CEO of ARIAD Pharmaceuticals, Neurocrine Biosciences, Pharmacopeia, GenPharm International (acquired by MedaRx), Argonaut Technologies, Caliper Technologies, Illumina Technologies, IDUN Pharmaceuticals and FASTTRACK Systems. Mr. Bock was a co-founder of Athena Neurosciences (acquired by Elan Pharmaceuticals for $700M), Vertex Pharmaceuticals, and Onyx Pharmaceuticals. Mr. Bock started his career as a Researcher at Genentech, Inc. in the field of infectious diseases. He was selected by Venture Capital Journal as one of the Ten Most Influential Venture Capitalists, by Red Herring Magazine as one of the Top Ten Innovators, by Small Times as both the Innovator of the Year and Top Four Business Leaders and by the Forbes/Wolfe NanoReport as one of the Top Ten Power Brokers In Nanotechnology. He is a Member of the Advisory Board and the Technology Advisory Board of the NanoBusiness Alliance. He received his B.A. in Biochemistry from Bowdoin College and his M.B.A. from Anderson School at University of California Los Angeles.

About Dr. Paul Alivisatos

Dr. Alivisatos is a Member of the Scientific Advisory Board of Nanosys, Inc. Dr. Alivisatos is a Professor of Chemistry at the University of California, Berkeley with a joint appointment at the Lawrence Berkeley Laboratories where he is the Head of Molecular Design Institute, and Director of the Material Science Division. Dr. Alivisatos is one of the leaders in nanotechnology with a particular focus on zero dimensional materials. Dr. Alivisatos has won the National Science Foundation Presidential Young Investigator Award, the Coblentz Award, the Outstanding Scientific Accomplishment in Materials Chemistry (DOE), and the Outstanding Young Investigator Award (Materials Research Society). Dr. Alivisatos received his Ph.D. in Physical Chemistry at the University of California, Berkeley, followed by a Post Doctoral Fellowship at AT&T Bell Labs.
