Milpitas, Calif., June 26, 2014 – Nanosys, Inc., an advanced materials architect, today announced that Noland Granberry has joined the company’s executive team as Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer. The hiring comes as Nanosys enters an era of rapid growth and product commercialization. Granberry joins Nanosys with 30 years of financial and operational leadership at technology companies ranging from pre-IPO start-ups to publicly traded companies, where he has gained experience in marketing, supply chain management, strategic partnerships and mergers and acquisitions.

Noland Granberry is responsible for leading and managing Nanosys’ worldwide accounting and financial reporting. Noland’s background in the financial and technology industry stretches across 30 years and includes experience in accounting, auditing, Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX) compliance, financial forecasting, and tax planning and compliance.

Granberry joined Nanosys in June 2014 from Silicon Image where, as CFO, he led the company to strong revenue growth and profitability. Prior to Silicon Image, he served as the director of Sarbanes-Oxley compliance at Xilinx, Inc. where he established and managed a successful compliance program. He also served as the senior director of finance at SanDisk Corporation where he was responsible for managing worldwide accounting and financial reporting activities. Other appointments include positions as corporate controller at IKOS Systems, Inc. and senior audit manager at Ernst & Young.

Color performance of LCDs industry-wide has gone largely unchanged until now. 3M research data shows that devices with 3M QDEF-enabled wide color gamut will be noticeably different from other standard LCD devices and highly preferred by consumers worldwide. 3M QDEF utilizes the light emitting properties of quantum dots to create an ideal backlight for LCDs, which is one of the most critical factors in the color and efficiency performance of LCDs. A quantum dot, which is 10,000 times narrower than a human hair, can be tuned to emit light at very precise wavelengths. This means display makers can create a highly-optimized backlight that only produces the exact wavelengths of red, green and blue light needed by an LCD for optimal color and energy performance. Trillions of these quantum dots protected by barrier film fit inside an LCD backlight unit. The new film replaces one already found inside LCD backlights, which means the manufacturing process requires no new equipment or process changes for the LCD manufacturer.

San Diego, Calif., June 2, 2014 –  Nanosys, Inc. today announced LMS Co., Ltd., as the second major supplier of optical films based on its proprietary Quantum Dot Enhancement Film (QDEF) light emitting technology. LMS, based in South Korea and one of the world’s leading producers of optical films for displays has been qualified by Nanosys to utilize QDEF technology for its Quantum Light Accumulation Sheet (QLAS). QLAS makes LCDs more vibrant and lifelike by improving brightness and color gamut by over 50%. A demonstration can be seen at the 2014 DisplayWeek this week in San Diego at the LMS booth (#335) and QLAS is now available to display manufacturers.

Seoul, Korea, October 1, 2013 – Nanosys, enabling a new generation of perfect-color fidelity, energy-efficient displays with its quantum-dot technology, today announced that it has passed a major production milestone at its recently opened 60,000 square foot manufacturing facility in Milpitas, CA. The shipment of more than 2000kg of Nanosys Quantum Dot Concentrate™, used to make Quantum Dot Enhancement Film (QDEF™), represents a significant step forward in the adoption of quantum dot technology for displays.

Nanosys is demonstrating a 55-inch 4K TV utilizing QDEF technology at the IHS E&M Quantum Dot Seminar in Seoul, Korea this week. A drop-in optical component for LCDs, QDEF creates a richer, more lifelike color experience while consuming significantly less power. Based on a new generation of quantum dots from Nanosys, the 55-inch set on display in Korea achieves about 40% higher color gamut than commercially available white-LED based 4k televisions while reducing power consumption by more than 35%.

Most current LCDs are only capable of displaying 35 percent or less of the visible color spectrum. This means the viewing experience on an LCD is limited and vastly different from what is seen in the real world, as colors are altered or left out altogether. Wide color gamut displays make the viewing experience on an electronic device much closer to the vibrant visual experience of real life. An LCD powered by QDEF can display 50 percent or more color than a standard LCD. QDEF also provides a significant energy efficiency advantage over other LCD backlight technologies.

Commercialization of High-Capacity Electric Vehicle Battery Materials by Nanosys Approved for by DOE in $11 Million Program

Funds to Help Create EV Batteries with 300 Mile Range at Less Than $250/kWh

Palo Alto, Calif., August 11, 2011 – Nanosys, Inc., an advanced materials architect, today announced that the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has awarded it funds to refine and bring to scale its SiNANOdeTM materials for the automotive market. These innovations will enable Electric Vehicles (EVs) to travel 300 miles on a single charge. In addition to the primary DOE award of $4.8 million, approximately $6 million will be spent, through sub-awards and matches by the DOE and Nanosys, in the development and commercialization of advanced material technologies and manufacturing in the United States.

“We are honored the DOE has selected Nanosys for this grant,” said Jason Hartlove, president and CEO of Nanosys. “The future of a clean energy economy depends on increased adoption of electric and hybrid electric (PHEV) vehicles. Until such vehicles are able to achieve substantial operating range on a single charge with the economics of combustion vehicles, acceptance will be limited to early adopters. The commercialization of architected material solutions like SiNANOde provide the breakthroughs needed to progress on the path to achieving those goals.”

The grant is a part of the DOE’s larger mission to accelerate the development and deployment of advanced vehicle technologies through targeted programs aimed at increasing vehicle efficiency. DOE’s comprehensive approach is aimed at creating new innovations throughout the vehicle, including high capacity electric vehicle batteries and components that should significantly exceed existing state-of-the-art technologies in terms of performance and/or cost. The agency has set a target for bringing the cost of lithium-ion batteries down to $250/kWh and increasing capacity to 300 miles per charge for the next generation of EVs.

In recent tests, Nanosys’ SiNANOdeTM anode material has doubled capacity while providing breakthrough charge/discharge cycle life improvements. Nanosys will use the DOE funds to accelerate development through purchases of additional equipment and the hiring of additional staff.

“The Department of Energy is investing in new advanced technologies that will significantly improve vehicle fuel economy, save consumers money, and create skilled jobs for Americans,” said U.S. Energy Secretary Steven Chu in a DOE press release. “Investments in the next generation of autos will strengthen our economy and lead to a more fuel-efficient, clean energy future.”

In addition to EVs, Nanosys is currently working with domestic and international battery manufacturers to improve lithium-ion battery capacity using SiNANOdeTM in batteries for laptops & tablets, smart phones and other electronic devices.
