QUANTUM DOT LCD

Nanosys Quantum Dot technology provides LCD makers a unique technology differentiator that out-performs OLED while maintaining LCD's massive capex and cost advantage. There are three LCD applications for Nanosys Quantum Dots, each offer unique cost and performance advantages: QDEF™, QDOG™ and QDCC.

QDEF™: Quantum Dot Enhancement Film

QDEF™ (Quantum Dot Enhancement Film) is a thin film for LCDs based on Nanosys proprietary photo-luminescent Quantum Dots. The first QDEF-enabled product hit the market in 2013 in the Kindle Fire HDX 7” tablet. Now, just a few years later, our QDEF™ technology is being deployed in displays of all types and sizes, from mobile devices all the way up to 88-inch TVs and beyond. 

QDEF™ offers LCD makers OLED-like performance in a low-cost package that requires zero capex investment. 

Nanosys offers three different types of QDEF through Nanosys’ film coating partners:

QDOG™: Quantum Dot Glass technology

QDOG™ delivers all of the color and brightness benefits of QDEF in an incredibly thin package. This lower cost Quantum Dot implementation eliminates the need for plastic barrier films and enables 5mm-thin LCD screens in products from monitors to TVs.  

QDOG™ is based on Nanosys’ 100% Heavy Metal Free Quantum Dot technology and available from Nanosys’ select display panel partners.

QDCC-LCD: Quantum Dot Color Conversion for LCD

QDCC is a display component with pixelated green and red quantum dots aligned with blue light source pixels. It converts blue source light into green or red at the outermost surface of displays. Nanosys’ proprietary QDCC technology can deliver the best picture qualities with perfect 180 degree viewing angle, high efficiency and the highest color gamut. 

Pixelation of green and red Quantum Dots can be achieved via either photo lithography or ink jet printing, which provides display makers flexibility. QDCC is  based on Nanosys’ 100% Heavy Metal Free Quantum Dot technology.

QDCC-LCD is in development and QD inks and photoresists are available from select Nanosys partners.

QDCC-OLED: Quantum Dot Color Conversion for Organic Light Emitting Diode

QDCC-OLED may finally help to solve decades-long problems in manufacturing big-screen OLED panels for TV without losing color performance. Unlike today’s WOLED TVs, which rely on dozens of layers to produce white source light and then to filter it into red, green, blue and white, QDCC-OLED needs fewer layers. The result is lower bill of materials and higher manufacturing throughput. Since QDCC relies on Quantum Dots to convert blue source light into very sharp green and red at subpixels, much wider color gamuts can be covered.

Quantum Dot MicroLED 

Nanosys Quantum Dot technology is helping to simplify microLED display manufacturing, accelerating microLED technology’s path to market

QDCC-MicroLED: Quantum Dot Color Conversion for MicroLED

Quantum Dots can improve microLED displays by reducing  manufacturing complexity, potentially accelerating this exciting new technology’s path to market. Combining pixelated red and green Quantum Dots with a blue microLED light source, QDCC-microLEDs can be an immediate relief to high complexities and thus low yields of microLED displays made from millions of red, green and blue microLEDs.  

Nanosys is partnering with several leading microLED makers to bring QDCC-microLEDs to market.

Emissive Quantum Dots 

The simplest displays future emitter material for emissive displays, QDEL will finally make low-cost, ultra-thin and flexible displays a reality. 

QDEL: Quantum Dot Electro Luminescent

Quantum Dot Electro Luminescent technology, is the future of Quantum Dots. Electroluminescent Quantum Dots are similar to OLED devices in that the Quantum Dots convert electricity into photons. Unlike OLEDs, QDEL displays can be made using the lowest cost printing techniques, offer the robust reliability of inorganic materials and can be tuned to meet any color specification. Nanosys announced record-setting external quantum efficiency (EQE) of greater than 10% for red, green and blue Heavy Metal Free QDEL materials, an industry first. 

Nanosys is partnering with the world’s leading emissive display companies to develop QDEL displays. We are focused on developing only100% Heavy Metal Free Quantum Dots for this application.
