DisplayDaily: Nanosys Shows Hisense Dual-Cell QD TV at Display Week; Coming to Market in 2020

“Dual-cell LCD TV Panels were on display in the Display Week booths of several panel makers… The technology can produce OLED-like performance at low and medium luminance, and LCD-like performance at high luminance. The initial concerns have been cost and power consumption.

In its booth, Nanosys showed a prototype of the Hisense ULED XD TV using a dual-cell panel and Nanosys quantum dots. The set looked startlingly good, as did the dual-cell panels showed by BOE and CSOT. But this was a full-up TV set, not just a panel, and Hisense has told Jeff Yurek of Nanosys that the set will be available for sale in 2020.”

Nanosys Wins "People's Choice" Award at DisplayWeek 2019

Nanosys was honored to win the People’s Choice Award for Best Large Booth at the Society for Information Display’s (SID) DisplayWeek 2019 conference being held this week in San Jose, CA.

In their booth on the floor of the Society for Information Display's Display Week at the Los Angeles Convention Center yesterday, some of the folks at quantum-dot-maker Nanosys seemed almost giddy. Samsung's 2017 QLED TV sets, which use Nanosys-licensed QD technology, are a significant critical success, and the company's Hyperion QD technology, which was featured in the booth, is in TV sets from Hisense, TCL and others that should be on the market early next year at prices that should perhaps half that of Samsung's 2017 QLED sets...

Industry analyst Chris Chinnock visited Nanosys' booth at SID DisplayWeek and walked away impressed with Hyperion Quantum Dots, Nanosys' RoHS compliant solution for BT.2020 displays: 

Nanosys, for example, has developed a “hybrid” solution they call Hyperion Quantum Dots, which mixes cadmium-free red and cadmium-based green quantum dots into a single film. They showed a side-by-side demo on the show floor with identical TVs and image performance (90+% of BT 2020). (...) This should be a big deal as compliance is a big driver in QD adoption. Mass production is expected in early 2017.

Nanosys and Hitachi Chemical Partner to Accelerate Adoption of Quantum Dot Technology for Displays

SAN FRANCISCO, May 23, 2016 -- Nanosys, Inc. announced today that Hitachi Chemical and Nanosys have partnered in the development of QDEF optical films for display applications. 

Hitachi Chemical plans to begin shipping QDEF to display manufacturers in mass production volumes during the 2nd half of 2016. This new supply of high quality and cost competitive QDEF will further accelerate the utilization of Quantum Dot technology in displays of all types, including UltraHD televisions, monitors and mobile devices.

Nanosys Quantum Dot Enhancement Film wins 5th Consecutive award at SID DisplayWeek with another "Best In Show"

Nanosys also won an award in the small-exhibit category for its quantum-dot TVs.  Nanosys’s Display Week demonstration included three matched 65-in. UHD TVs (Fig. 6).  Each of the sets used the same color filters, underlying LEDs and direct-lit backlight structures.  They were also driven at the same settings from the same content.  The only difference was in the phosphor used to create white light in the backlight.  These were: conventional white LEDs, Nanosys’s Quantum-Dot-Enhancement Film, and Nanosys’ Cadmium-Free Quantum-Dot- Enhancement Film.  The differences in color performance without noticeable brightness loss were striking.  Rec.2020 color-gamut coverage ranged from <60% for the white LED set to ~75% for the set with cadmium-free quantum dots to >90% for the set with quantum dots.  This demonstration showed that cadmium-based quantum dots have a significant performance advantage over other phosphor materials and that Rec.2020 is achievable today. •

3M Announces Rec. 2020 Readiness at Display Week 2015

3M Display Materials and Systems Division announced the company has developed technology solutions addressing the Rec. 2020 standard for color enhanced UHD displays at SID Display Week. In San Jose, Calif., 3M is showcasing flat panel displays of all sizes with up to 93.7 percent Rec. 2020 color gamut, one of the largest known color gamuts in any display, in an otherwise commercially available 4K LCD monitor.

“Rec. 2020 color performance was thought to be in the distant future, but with the addition of Quantum Dot technology and the 3M Quantum Dot Enhancement Film, this performance is available today,” said James Thielen, 3M Product Development Specialist and SID Display Week symposium speaker.

Quantum Dots Enable High Dynamic Range TV

On the show floor at SID 2014, Nanosys' 10-foot-by-10-foot booth won a Best in Show award in the small exhibit category.  Nanosys, which makes the quantum dots used in 3M's quantum-dot enhancement film (QDEF), was showing two TV sets side-by-side: one was a conventional LCD TV; the second incorporated both QDEF and Dolby's HDR technology, and the image was compelling. But what does QDEF have to do with HDR?
